About Us
Our Story
In early 2023, a small circle of Igbo friends in Victoria, British Columbia, began gathering casually, sharing meals, celebrating milestones, and supporting one another through life’s joyful and challenging moments. These informal meetings became more than social visits; they were a lifeline of cultural connection, friendship, and belonging.
As their bond grew, so did their vision. They invited friends, and those friends invited others. A WhatsApp group was formed to keep the growing network connected. Soon, home gatherings evolved into community celebrations, including end-of-year parties and memorable housewarmings. The group came together not only to celebrate, but also to comfort one another during times of loss and sorrow. A true sense of extended family had begun to take shape.
By late 2024, it became clear that this was more than a social circle; it was a community. The idea to formalize the group was proposed, driven by the desire to preserve Igbo identity, showcase cultural pride, and create a lasting impact for future generatio
On March 25th, 2025, an election was held, and the group welcomed its first Executive Committee. On May 11th, 2025, the group received official registration as a non-profit organization, marking the birth of the Igbo Cultural Association of Victoria, BC. Shortly after, on June 21st, 2025, these officials were inaugurated and commissioned with a mandate to build our growing community in tradition, love, and unity.
Since then, the Association has served as a welcoming home for Igbo people across Victoria; a place to fraternize, build meaningful relationships, and combat isolation. It offers a space where adults find community, families find support, and children build pride in their heritage through cultural events, language exposure, dance, storytelling, and shared experiences.
Today, the Igbo Cultural Association of Victoria stands as a beacon of unity, culture, and mutual support, committed to preserving our rich Igbo heritage while fostering connection, empowerment, and belonging within the broader Canadian society.
